The future of play will be shaped by both artificial intelligence and an appetite for unplugged creativity, according to the international TrendCommittee of Spielwarenmesse.
The committee has just announced its two major ToyTrends for 2026, which it describes as “AI Loves (to) Play” and “Creative Mindfulness.”
Drawing on their decades of industry insights, the committee says these trends represent the most influential forces now reshaping the global toy market. One of them is rooted in technological evolution, the other in the human need for calm and creativity.
Both will be showcased from January 27–31 in a dedicated exhibit at Spielwarenmesse’s Entrance Mitte in Nurnberg, where visitors can test products and attend lectures in the Toy Business Forum.
AI and the Next Generation of Play

The committee says the first trend, “AI Loves (to) Play,” captures a moment when artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming how children engage with toys. Spielwarenmesse says this new generation of smart toys does far more than just respond to commands; they also learn, adapt, and evolve alongside their users.
“Artificial intelligence is now part of daily life, and that reality is extending naturally into play,” the TrendCommittee noted. “From adaptive robots and talking figures to intelligent learning systems, AI-powered toys combine technology and imagination to create entirely new forms of interaction.”
Significantly, Spielwarenmesse emphasized that many AI toys are being designed to work without screens, helping parents manage digital exposure while maintaining educational and creative benefits. The committee sees this balance as a defining quality of the most successful tech-driven toys of the coming year.
The Rise of Creative Mindfulness
Counterbalancing the high-tech trend is “Creative Mindfulness,” which reflects a growing global interest in activities that nurture focus, self-expression, and emotional well-being.
According to Spielwarenmesse, this movement invites both children and adults to “immerse themselves in color, texture, and materials,” using crafting, upcycling, painting, and artisanal techniques as pathways to relaxation and personal growth.
“Mindful creativity is not just about making something; it’s about taking time, slowing down, and experiencing joy in the process,” the committee explained. “The act of creating by hand promotes concentration, builds self-confidence, and helps people reconnect with themselves.”
Industry observers note that this return to tactile play aligns with broader consumer preferences for wellness-oriented products and sustainable materials. It also reflects post-pandemic shifts toward hobbies that foster calm and resilience.
A Dual Vision of the Future of Toys
By presenting both “AI Loves (to) Play” and “Creative Mindfulness” as equal trends, Spielwarenmesse is underscoring the diversity and adaptability of the modern toy industry, one that can embrace innovation while honoring tradition.
“These two ToyTrends represent the dual heartbeat of our time,” the TrendCommittee said. “Children and families want to explore technology that inspires them, but they also want creative, hands-on experiences that bring balance and mindfulness to daily life.”
