Nelvana and Mattel Television Studios are co-producing a new animated series for the Barney franchise following a fourteen-year hiatus for the children’s entertainment brand.
The new Barney’s World animated series follows the classic Barney character and his friends as they play on a playground and learn life lessons about love, self-confidence and creativity.
“Generations of fans have eagerly awaited the return of Barney, and we’re delighted to collaborate with Mattel in co-producing Barney’s World,” said Nelvana VP, Mellany Welsh.
“Bringing the iconic purple dinosaur back to television, along with enticing new merchandise, is a true honor,” added Welsh. “Barney’s timeless lessons of love, friendship, and community have always struck a chord, and now a new generation will learn and grow with Barney and his friends on their super-dee-duper adventures.”
The debut season for the Barney’s World animated series will feature all-new original music, as well as updated takes on classic songs from the original Barney TV series.
The Barney character will be joined by two friendly dinosaurs named Billy and Baby Bop and their three human friends David, Mel, and Vivie.
“The goal of Mattel Television Studios is to develop and distribute episodic and long-form content that expands Mattel’s characters and storylines across linear and streaming platforms worldwide,” said Mattel EVP, Josh Silverman. “Barney nurtures the power of love in all of us, and we are thrilled to bring him back to fans all around the world.
“We hope this modern revival leaves an impression on young audiences, imparting lessons that will positively influence them as they grow up.”
In addition to serving as a co-producer for the upcoming TV series, Mattel has been named the Canadian licensing representative for both Barney’s World and classic Barney.
Mattel will build a licensing program for the brand that includes themed apparel, accessories, footwear, home goods, personal care offerings, food, stationery, consumer electronics and more.
The Barney’s World series will premiere on the Treehouse broadcasting network and the STACKTV streaming platform beginning on October 14, 2024. Select episodes of the Barney’s World show will also be available on YouTube.
Owned by Corus Entertainment, Nelvana is a Canada-based entertainment studio that produces and distributes family-friendly content and ancillary consumer products programs around the world.
