McFarlane Toys has released the first line of a brand new collection of Nickelodeon’s Avatar: The Last Airbender action figures, launching exclusively at Walmart.
“Avatar: The Last Airbender animation brings a visual depth of expression and emotion to its characters, making it one of the most beloved animated shows of all time,” said Todd McFarlane, CEO of McFarlane Toys. “We worked hard to visually capture that same look in each figure that we created for the fans and collectors.”
Avatar remains very popular today, despite the fact it ran for only three seasons, from 2005 to 2008. The show nailed a rare 100 score on Rotten Tomatoes and today carries a 96 score on IMDB, and was said by many critics to be the best children’s series of all time.
It was also incredibly popular with viewers, and was the most viewed show of all time on Nickelodeon, with the top-rated episode hitting 5.7 million viewers during the four-part conclusion of the series in 2008.
The show’s lasting popularity was underscored again last year when it began airing on Netflix, and became the most popular show for both children and adults. For that reason, license consumer product sales have remained strong.
Avatar is set in an Asiatic-like world in which certain people, known as ‘benders’, can manipulate one of the four elements, those being water, earth, fire, or air, through their telekinetic ability.
The only individual who can bend all four elements is known as the “Avatar,” and he or she is essentially reincarnated over and over. The Avatar is responsible for maintaining balance between the world’s four nations, and serves as the bridge between the physical world and the spirit world.
The original series is centered around the story of twelve-year-old Aang, the current Avatar and last survivor of his nation, the Air Nomads, along with his friends Katara, Sokka, and later Toph, as they strive to end the Fire Nation’s war against the other nations of the world.
Avatar also resulted in an almost equally popular and well regarded sequel, The Legend of Korra, which follows the story of another incarnation of the Avatar as a 17-year-old girl.
