MGM has a horror flick hit on their hands with Candyman, and the studio is now expanding its licensing program to meet demand for consumer products.
Producer/writer Jordan Peele has enjoyed a run of successful horror films, starting with his debut effort Get Out, and Candyman has hit more than $50 million at the box office as of this date, despite the impact of COVID restrictions.
MGM’s Consumer Product Division said this week they will debut a robust lineup of new merchandise for Candyman. Licensed merchandise will include apparel, accessories, novelties and collectibles.
Some of the new Candyman licensees include:
- Apparel & Accessories- Goodie Two Sleeves, Cavity Colors, Fright Rags, Middle of Beyond and Lootcrate
- Collectibles/Novelty/Gifts– Middle of Beyond, Just Funky, Lootcrate, Funko and YouTooz
- Costumes: Trick or Treat Studios
“Whether fans are rediscovering horror titles from deep within MGM’s library, or are new to the genre altogether, we are thrilled to be expanding our Candyman merchandise to give consumers exciting new products to keep the spookiness going all year long,” said Robert Marick, Executive Vice President of Global Consumer Products and Experiences.
Candyman is a remake of the classic horror film of the same name, but Peele unleashes a fresh take on the blood-chilling urban legend
Rising filmmaker Nia DaCosta (Little Woods) directs this contemporary incarnation of MGM’s 1992 cult classic, which was originally based on Clive Barker’s short story The Forbidden.
Candyman tells the story of housing projects in Chicago’s Cabrini Green neighborhood that were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer. In this incarnation, visual artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his girlfriend (Teyonah Parris) have moved into a luxury loft condo in the now gentrified neighborhood. A chance encounter with a Cabrini Green old-timer (played by Colman Domingo) exposes Anthony to the true story behind Candyman and unleashes a wave of violence that puts him on a collision course with destiny.
