Your average person may never have heard of the Epiphone Grabber G3, but for punk rock fans and bassists, the instrument is a legend.
I’m one of those fans; as a former punk rock drummer and occasional bass player myself, Green Day remains my favorite rock band, and I play a lot of their music to this day.
The Grabber is the source of the urgent, pounding bass tones that helped make the genre-defining band Green Day famous, played by the equally legendary bassist Mike Dirnt.
Now Epiphone and parent company Gibson are unveiling the Mike Dirnt Grabber G3, a new signature bass created in partnership with the Green Day co-founder.

Dirnt says the G3 became his favorite instrument as soon as he played it the first time.
“My original Gibson bass came into my life when we were touring for 39 Smooth, our first full length record,” Dirnt recalls. “That was the first Gibson bass I had ever played, That became my sound for a long time, and my look.”
The launch marks the latest high-profile collaboration for the Gibson Brands portfolio, which has steadily expanded its strategy around artist-driven products, experiential retail, and collectible-focused licensing programs.
The Grabber really exploded into the consciousness of musicians and fans at the same time Dirnt did, when Green Day released its genre-changing album Dookie in 1994. As a trio that produced incredibly rich sound with just a single guitarist, bassist and drummer, the Grabber bass took on a starring role in Dookie, just as it did in Green Day’s many followup albums. When Green Day released the chart-topping American Idiot, the band not only won a Grammy, it became the defining act in the modern punk rock genre.
More than 30 years after the release of Dookie, Dirnt continues to perform with his favorite bass, most recently on Green Day’s The Saviors World Tour in front of millions of fans.
Creating a new version of the Grabber is a dream he’s had for decades now.
“I’ve always wanted to do a version of the G3,’ Dirnt says. “Problem was, back in the day when my bass was broken, it was just really hard to replicate it.
“This bass (the new G3) sounds every bit as good as my original … if not better,” Dirnt adds. “I’ve just toured with them for over two years, and they performed like magic!”
Fans can now get their own version of Dirnt’s Grabber G-3 bass, as the instrument is being sold worldwide with a Silverburst finish at authorized Epiphone dealers, Gibson Garage locations in Nashville and London, and online at Epiphone.com. A Natural finish is also available globally, exclusively through the Gibson Garage, and online at Epiphone.com.
Known for his punchy bass lines and dynamic vocals, Dirnt has been a driving force behind one of music’s most influential and long-running bands. Epiphone says the new Grabber G-3 reflects his legacy with a design that blends classic construction and modern performance features.
Crafted with a double-cutaway maple body and a 34-inch scale three-piece maple neck, the Grabber G-3 offers smooth playability and solid resonance. Depending on the finish—available in Silverburst or Natural—players can choose between an ebony or maple fretboard, each adorned with black abalone dot inlays and 20 medium jumbo frets.
For you serious bass geeks out there, Epiphone says the headstock features the classic Grabber “V” shape, paired with open-gear bass tuners and historic clover buttons. A bone nut enhances resonance, while the Leo Quan Badass II bridge delivers powerful attack, sustain, and full adjustability.
At the heart of the Grabber G-3 are three Gibson G-3 pickups, handcrafted in Nashville at the Gibson Pickup Shop. The strings run through the body and are anchored with ferrules on the back, contributing to the bass’s rich tone and lasting sustain; something that was critical for a trio like Green Day. For example, when singer-guitarist Billie Joe Armstrong drops into a guitar solo, it’s up to Dirnt and the band’s amazing drummer Tré Cool to carry the beat and the melody.
“Whether you’re a die-hard Green Day fan or a bassist seeking a bold, versatile instrument, the Grabber G-3 delivers the punch, style, and legacy of a punk rock legend,” the company says.
