The news was revealed as an exclusive from the entertainment publication Deadline, which says the plots of the still untitled movies are still being kept under wraps.
Deadline reports that Jill Wilfert and Ryan Christians from The Lego Group are producing all three projects, while Universal’s contributions will be guided by EVP of Production Development Matt Reilly and Director of Production Development Jacqueline Garell.
So, what do we know so far?
First of all, Kasdan is directing a new film based on a script by Andrew Mogel and Jarrad Paul, who wrote The D Train and The Grinder. The script is based on an original idea and previous draft by Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows (The Pickup, Animal Friends).
Kasdan will also be producing, along with Melvin Mar through their production company Detective Agency.
Kasdan comes to the project with a number of top-grossing films under his belt. He directed the Jumanji films for Sony, which grossed $1.76 billion, and also directed the recent Amazon MGM Studios film Red One, which is due to premiere in theatres on November 15. As well, a third Jumanji film is set for release in December 2026, and will also be directed by Kasdan.
Jenkins, who is best known from the phenomenal success of Wonder Woman, will be directing a Lego film based on a script she co-wrote with former DC Entertainment President Geoff Johns.
He also wrote for the sequel Wonder Woman 1984 and TV’s The Flash. Jenkins is producing the film with her company Wicious Pictures.
The third film from Joe Cornish is one in which he’s writing the final script based on a draft by Heather Anne Campbell, who previously has written for Rick & Morty and One Punch Man.
The trio of films is big news for Lego, which has been incredibly successful in creating an entertainment brand based on their building blocks, as well as from licensing deals based on collaborations like the Lego Batman Movie or Lego Avengers: Code Red, not to mention the Lego Movie and The Lego Movie 1: The Second Part, and TV specials with Jurassic Park.
As well, Universal worked with the Lego Group on the Pharrell William’s biopic Piece by Piece, which was told fully through Lego animation. That movie is 84% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with critics with an A Cinema Score. The Morgan Neville-directed title was just nominated for Best Documentary Feature and Best Music Documentary for the Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards.
