As Spider-Man likes to say, ‘With great power, comes great profits.” Or something like that.
Marvel’s licensed Spider-Man 2 from Insomniac Games has smashed records to become the fastest-selling Playstation Studios game in history.
The critically acclaimed game sold more than 2.5 million copies in the first 24 hours as fans flocked to live out the adventures of twin Spider-Men Peter Parker and Miles Morales. The huge spike in opening day sales caused Spider-Man 2 to outstrip Santa Monica Studio’s God of War Ragnarok at the top of the PlayStation day-one launch sales chart.
Part of that is certainly due to the draw of the Spider-Man character, who has long been among the most popular in Marvel’s rich canon of superheroes, but it’s also due to the stunning gameplay introduced by Sony Interactive Entertainment and developer Insomniac Games.
“Insomniac Games holds itself to incredibly high standards when it comes to delivering engaging and innovative gameplay experiences,” said Eric Lempel, SVP, Global Marketing, Sales, and Business Operations at Sony Interactive Entertainment. “Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is Insomniac Games’ third installment in the franchise for PlayStation. Built from the ground up to take advantage of the unique features of PlayStation 5, the goal was to massively build off the action, storylines, and features from the first two games. With an epic storyline, two playable super heroes, a visually-stunning Marvel’s New York, and so much more, this is a game you can get lost in for hours.
“On behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment, I want to say thank you to the fans,” Lempel added. “We truly hope you are enjoying your time playing as Peter and Miles in this amazing adventure.”
The launch is a big deal for Sony, as the popularity of Spider-Man 2 is also expected to drive more sales of the company’s Playstation 5 console. With very positive ratings from most critics, Spider-Man 2 is boasting a 90 critics score on Metacritic and an equally good 9.0 score from players, which are expected to drive consistently high sales over time. That may change the webslinger’s philosophy from the 1967 cartoon theme song, which claimed, “Wealth and fame he’s ignored, action is his reward.”
